Actually, he's a soldier coming back from Afghanistan and, unless I'm very much mistaken, she is one of those girls who are just so bursting with patriotism that she NEEDS to be married to a soldier... any soldier...

Why can't she just give him a great welcome home, then see how it goes? That would be patriotic and a hell of a lot smarter.

Not hard to find military guys in this area that she could actually meet before marrying.
