Florida & 2nd Ammendment

New posts
Ya'll are getting off the 2nd amendment subject. ( Matt Gaetz drift, I guess.) A thought hit me the other day: you know the saying " the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun". I was curious, how many of these "good guys with a gun", who truly saved the day, did it with an assault rifle?
Sorry for the detour

I agree with President Biden! He is a reasonable man who understands consequences of doing nothing...

I'll will go a step further and say that we should not be allowed t to purchase a gun without an extensive background check. Okay so what does extensive mean? I do not have a specific answer but I will say that it should prevent many of these mass murderers who have shown some indications of "threats" to kill people prior to the mass shooting to never be able to purchase a weapon.

It is a culture of fear brought to you by GOP. They have not only sold their soul they have decided that radicalization of their right wing politics is the only option for the party. That word radicalization is a dangerous word and I do not use it lightly but I get a lot of their propaganda and I am very concerned about where we are headed as a country. I honestly thought many would relax now that Trump is gone. But they are not relaxed and what I have seen and heard is very disturbing. Actually it is disgusting. This is a country of hate and Joe Biden is not going to be able to fix it most likely. As always I believe that all of us must participate in civilized conversations because the hatred between the left and right politics is growing and neither side is willing to listen anymore. Our democracy will not survive if we continue on this path. This 2nd amendment issue is how the GOP will build it's power back. Voter suppression is just their plan B. Immigration is their plan C. So the ABC's ofhow to gain back power is not necessarily to win elections but to dismiss the elections and radicalize their base. I believe that shame and blame politics and conversations only serve to make this problem worse and will actually give them more of a chance to win elections. If we the people do not find a way to communicate our democracy is over because neither side will accept elections. We are right here at a crossroads between democracy and authoritarian power.
"I believe that all of us must participate in civilized conversations"??? Perhaps you could try following your own advice.

We wake up to another mass shooting because easy access to guns make us the safest nation in the world.

Yes I sometimes need to follow my own advice. Agreed.

We do need to have civilized conversations instead of I am right and you are wrong conversations. We need to listen to each other so lets talk about these problems. Assault weapons. Back ground checks. Mental health screening. Mass shootings with assault weapons from people who pass back ground checks. What do we do because doing nothing is wrong?

Needs to be verified, but read there are some early reports a “good guy with a gun” is one of the victims in the Indianapolis Fedex shooting.

Well that's a good start. Yes, to more screening/regulation. No, to denying law abiding citizens access to owning these weapons as their reasons for owning do not fit the popular narrative. People with mental issues cause far more havoc than mass shootings, but yes, this needs to happen now. Unfortunately folks make sweeping conclusions about party affiliation, and parrot the same thing over and over. Nobody seems to listening and if you reach over from your "side", many try to shame or cancel you. There are many common sense tweaks to the law that can greatly reduce these tragedies. This is what we can do going forward. Backward reaching mandates that require the Feds to know what you may or may not already own would be highly counterproductive, and a wholesale attack on the 2nd amendment itself.

Every gun owner is a responsible good guy with a gun right up to the point when they aren’t. Would just one you gun rights advocates please tell us at what point of gun saturation are we going to be safer? Asking for a nation sick of this sht.

Would you agree, those who create laws and wrap themselves in the Flag of less regulation of guns are primarily of the conservative political parties? There was a few years a go a bill making its way through Florida Legislature that would have allowed certain rights to be restored with regard to firearm ownership. Not sure it passed but Marion Hammer seems to have supported it. As for changes to the Second Amendment, the framers made it difficult to change but not impossible. And then one of the framers said this.
"I am certainly not an advocate for frequent and untried changes in laws and constitutions. I think moderate imperfections had better be borne with; because, when once known, we accommodate ourselves to them, and find practical means of correcting their ill effects. But I know also, that laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths disclosed, and manners and opinions change with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also, and keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy, as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors." - Jefferson to H. Tompkinson (AKA Samuel Kercheval), July 12, 181610

Thank you for the response without attaching insults. I think we are on the same page with the common sense tweak laws and regulations. I agree there are things we can do to reduce these tragedies but congress will have to step up to the plate instead of blaming and shaming each other. The reality is that congress doesn't do anything which is wrong. You and I agree that something has to be done. I am not aware of any proposals to deny law abiding citizens from owning weapons. So maybe we can stop with blaming and shaming and canceling each other and do something for a change. The only thing I don't agree on is the "wholesale attack on the 2nd amendment". I think that is a narrative that comes from the republican party and it is not accurate at all. At least we are talking and maybe even finding common ground on the fact that "something" is better than "nothing" in terms of improving all of our safety. Do you agree?
