When do campaigns Signs Become Litter?

Litter is defined as waste disposed in the wrong place by unlawful human action and can vary in size of incident, occurrence or items.
It can occur as small items like campaign signs dispersed in public places outdoors.
Litter can be by malicious or accidental intent and is generally disposed of illegally rather than lawfully.
Litter has the potential to cause harm to human health, safety and welfare, it harms wildlife and causes negative environmental impact.

With the left over campaign signs that have yet to be removed by the defeated candidates it's fair to assume they have no use for them and are leaving them in place deliberatley to be removed by others, thereby littering.
So, we as community minded citizens have the right and a responsibility to remove litter from public property.

Former candidates wishing to hang on to their signs are requested to collect them as fast as possible. thank you.

Really...pick up your signs! These signs should be outlawed, or the very least make the candidates/campaigners responsible for them and put their phone number on the sign. If they are not picked up within 72 hours after the end of the election, the candidate should be fined $10. per day per sign.

I will volunteer (free of charge) and be the campaign sign police if the county passes this law or one similar to it.

You bring up a strong point!
I cant think of one candidate that didnt mention responsibility.
You offer a good foundation to start with.
Sign responsibilty should have started with the lawfull placing of the signs in the first place. Fines may be a bit much as we cant verify who placed them there and when.

Commissioners, or Commissioner candidates, any comments?

Nice post.

If the sign says, for instance, elect Cecelia Jones and it is her campaign sign.....I think that is obvious.

Disclaimer; I have nothing against Cecelia Jones, other than her signs...and only because her signs are still up!!! If she were to be in the general election, I could understand.........so what is up with that??:idontno:

I do not have it in front of me to verify but I think the LDC gives 14 days to remove political signs. Of course they are not suppose to be on public property to start with, and I do not see how you can tell anyone to take a political sign off of private property in this country, but that is what I have been told.

Walton County Land Development Code: October 2007 Edition

Chapter VII. SIGNS

7.01.00 (F) Temperary political signs announcing a campaign drive or event, provided such signs are removed within 15 days following the campaign drive or event.

Even thought candidates are within the law.....I dislike the signs. Perhaps the Code should be amended.

now im really confused

Okay, so, the way I read it they have fifteen days then the signs are considered litter. The signs placed on private property are ok. Though Im a bit baffled why the LDC has jurisdiction in this matter. But hey, if it was wrong someone would have said something, right?
Thanks you guys.

Yep..I even have a letter to the 08 candidates signed by our very own Planning and Zoning Pat Blackshear (for what it is worth) dated February 08.

My signs

I picked up 80 more today and am working my way north. There shouldn't be a sign left south of freeport. I will complete my pickup in the required time. I promise I'm trying but other people put them out too I don't know where they all are. Please e-mail if you know where more are and I'll come get them.
