Whats more, 30ashopper, it is the federal government unilaterally taking over a function of private enterprise that has done no harm to anyone for decades. What is our great country coming to?

Damn, you guys would have argued against the nation going from wood fires to gas to electric lighting.

No, poppy. What we are arguing against is the total lack of common sense and past history displayed by our government. There has been no great need shown to totally change our lighting system in this country unless you, as an individual, desire to do so.

These changes were made by a free market reponding to new technologies that the comsumer wanted. The government had no role in the process. I am all for new technologies but I am totally against the government banning a product that is still cheaper and widely used than the product they are pushing. The government should get out of the way.

If we are trying to make the switch to electric vehicles, it would make sense to stress the grid a little bit less. I could see the value of having government jump in when it comes to our infrastructure. We do want to wean ourselves of of foreign oil, and oil in general, don't we?

Many countries have banned the bulbs, some (like the US) just set efficiency standards.

The bans and efficiency standards will save hundreds of millions of tons of carbon emissions each year.

Design a more efficient incandescent bulb if you don't like it. It's the same as the government setting standards for cars.
