Insulating Under a Cottage Needed

Hi:

Our cottages are now 10 year old (hard to believe - it feels like we just bought them!). They have insulation under the cottage (the cottages are raised a few feet above the ground) and the wire that holds the insulation up is starting to come apart in a few areas. We'll be getting this repaired, with new wire netting installed under the house. There's about 6 inches of insulation under the cottages which is in good shape. We're thinking about adding about 3 more inches of insulation since we're having the work done there anyway. Do you think adding more insulation is a good idea? Are there any downsides to adding more insulation? Any adivce on the insulation/wire netting that holds up the insulatoin is welcomed!

Thanks.

Overall, I think the more insulation the better, but adding it under the house is not necessarily the best use of funds.

More efficient appliances or hvac settings might be a better way to save.

You're lucky you have such a deep crawl space! A house I know of in the Eastern Lake area went under contract. There needed to be a termite inspection. But the crawl space under the house was only 6 inches deep, so it wasn't possible to get under the house. The owners had to pay for excavation. In the process they saw insulation down. So the owners had to pay for new insulation to be installed where it was down. Same problem as with your cottage, Paula -- the wires.

Suprised you don't have spray on insulation under the house? Its much better than pieces of insulation as its air tight
