Protect its citizens from monopolies, cartels and corporatization
There are reams of anti-trust and anti-collusion laws on the books now. Are you saying we need more of them? Or that the existing ones are ineffective?

What is corporatization?

Believe or not, but high oil prices are good for us, because only when we are forced do we actually change. Five years ago gas was a buck a gallon. The oil companies were not making the huge profits when crude was 12 dollars/barrel. No one complained, and it seemed everyone was buying SUVs payed for ,in many cases by their HELOCs. Now if only tax credits for efficient cars could be enacted, change could come faster. Don't hold your breath. Captain GW Ahab and cabinboy Dick Cheney are at the helm.

"Corporatization
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Corporatization in many nations is understood to refer to a form of economic reform which takes services from the direct control of the government, and places them in the control of corporations. This is often seen as a step towards full-scale privatization. In contrast the term may also refer to the construction of state Corporatism, where government-owned corporations are created and delegated public social tasks resembling Corporate nationalism, away from autonomous privatization.
In the United States, the term is used differently. Given American traditions of respect for individual rights, the term privatization will usually suggest transference of public goods or services to private individuals. Therefore, in the United States, corporatization refers to privatization resulting in corporate ownership and/or control."

You're right, there are already anti-trust laws on the books. There are also provisions against a government spying on its own citizens. Seems we've got a lot of laws, principles and civil rights being violated these days. Somehow I find the idea that we've got a president and a vice president who are in bed with the oil industry unsettling, to say the least. Don't you? I know that there are still people trying to defend this president, and this administration, but I can't for the life of me figure out why. I do think that it's time for those of us who are appalled at the damage Bush & Co. have done to stop our silence and stand up. The fear tactics will only work if those of us who oppose the government's policies let them. I completely agree that we have to get off the oil. I drive a hybrid car, and I ditched my old gas lawnmower and went back to a reel-mower. I moved downtown so that I could walk more and drive less. But as important as individual efforts are, I don't believe that we will come close to addressing the problem until we get this dangerous idiot out of office.

Less government?? do you live in the US?

Yes, I do, and I've also traveled extensively in the UK & Scandinavia. My point was that the Republicans generally, and Bush specifically, campaigned on a platform of "less government". What that really seems to mean is deregulation and let the corporations have a field day. Hence the unprecedented oil profits and this guy's obscene retirement package.

This administration would prefer it if you didn't think at all, John R.
