Bike Haters

New posts
I have never EVER biked in a place more unfriendly to cyclists than SoWal. What amazes me is all the stuff I read about folks down here being more enlightened about the environment, health, peace, love and happiness. ALL of that is thrown under the tires of their SUV's when their 5 minute commute to the liquor store, beer store, restaurant, beach, or work is delayed 10 seconds because they had to "swerve" to miss a bike. Flame on!

I am sure this has nothing to do with the fact that many of the cyclists here are some of the most entitled and rude bikers I have ever seen.

(And before you start spewing about me hating the environment and bikers, I regularly ride my bike, even wear spandex or a jersey on occasion, and have regular visitors who are gung ho bike riders.)

I am not saying that some of the behavior of drivers is justified, just that in many cases it is cause and effect and that since many of the bikers we hear negative reports about are locals or regular visitors, a little attitude/behavior change might go a long way towards making the roads much friendlier to bikers.

If you expect drivers to follow the rules and treat you with courtesy, you need to do the same for them.

Scooter, you will never hear me defending cyclists riding side by side and not yielding. That bothers me as much as the next person. BUT when I encounter those cyclists I wait until it's safe and go around them. No need for yelling, blowing the horn, getting all mad because I was delayed 10 seconds, or passing as close as possible to "Make Them Think!".

Totally agree. Multiple dillweeds do not a safe road make!

Though I do sometimes honk (a little beep, not trying to put my hand through the steering wheel) to let them know there is a car behind them if they are stretched out - like I ding my bell at people when I am on a bike.

Do you bikers worry about your safety? I have had to stop on 30A to let you have the road. Never seen less concern for personal safety than you all have. I don't honk, fly the flag, or hand gesture, but I would love to. Had the side mirror on my car hit by a bike at a stop sign, he flipped me off. Little scary, always afraid you are going to dart out in front of me. I don't think 30A is the place to power rides, go to 98, leave 30A for pleasure riding by us slow pokes.

Ugh...

On the Goldwing boards that I frequent there are two things that have two camps that will never meet in the middle...running a car tire on the back wheel and using synthetic oil.

The bicycles vs. cars beatdowns on the Sowal board are our version of the same. Why don't we just cut and paste from the countless threads that already exist? It's the same argument over and over again. It is what it is. Let it go and enjoy the day!

The countdown to the next cyclists vs. cars beatdown begins...............NOW!

I started to post this pic :funn:. We really should have a contest to see when the next Cyclists vs Motor Vehicle thread pops up. kurt could put up the prize money. Something along the lines of $1,000 to the person who guesses the closest date and time. Maybe even throw in a kicker (say another $1,000) if the winner guesses the right section of the forum the thread appears.

As a person who does ride a bicycle, when the weather gets a bit warmer, I encounter some of the same issues on the bike path, when riding home, on the bike path. I do respect bikes on 30a, as I do know that riding those particular bikes on the bike path, will ruin their tires. This debate will continue on, even after I take a dirt nap, but, I'm not crazy about those on the road{6} that I encountered yesterday, coming home from work, that were not single file. But, life will go on, the debate will continue, and maybe someday, people will be more resectful of each other. I hope.
